Why Your Check Engine Light Is On
When your vehicle’s check engine light illuminates it’s because a sensor has signaled to your vehicle’s internal computer that there is a function that is performing outside the normal specifications. When the light comes on diagnostic codes are stored within the computer. The codes will remain stored in the system even if the check engine light goes out.
When the light comes on, it’s likely something within the emissions system is at fault and the vehicle is releasing more emissions than is acceptable. A vehicle with a check engine light on will fail an emissions or smog inspection test. Common causes of a check engine light include:
- Loose gas cap
- Faulty catalytic converter
- Failed oxygen sensor
- Failed mass airflow sensor
- Damaged spark plugs or spark plug wires
Our Engine Repair Process
Engine repair services include several different tests and inspections to identify the cause and correctly repair the trouble. Is the vehicle low on engine oil or coolant? Are the repairs related to a gasket or seal failure causing a lack of fluid? Other concerns including fuel or ignition troubles that lead to other internal issues will also be under consideration as a possible fault.
Once all external engine troubles have been inspected and evaluated, testing moves to the engine’s internal operation. Tests performed on the internal workings of the engine may include an engine compression test, chemical block test for head or head gasket failures, cylinder leak down tests, and inspection of the timing components.
After several tests have been performed and the technician has been able to isolate the area of concern, further testing is completed in that specific area to determine what the exact cause of the issue is and how it is best remedied. Many vehicle engine repairs today are related to timing issues on both chain and belt driven motors.
The second most common cause of engine trouble is caused by a cylinder head or cylinder head gasket failure. While uncommon in many of today’s vehicles, lower engine failures result in the need for replacement in most cases.
Diesel Engine Repair Process
While similar in repair services, diesel engine repair services are rather infrequent in comparison to gas-engines. With any auto engine repair, the technician needs to determine the source of the failure. Many diesel engine troubles are external, such as difficulties with the turbocharger or injector pump failures.
Sun Auto Service technicians will focus on the cause of the malfunction and any components that were harmed as a result of the failure. Once this is accomplished, we can then determine the best course of action for repair.
Like gas-powered engines, diesel engines utilize compression tests to evaluate internal cylinder pressures. By obtaining this information, we can verify whether the trouble is a result of a cylinder head issue or lower-end internal engine malfunction. Once we are able to ascertain which area is responsible, we are able to prepare the most suitable solution for repair.
